Tums doesn’t work on bad heartburn?

heartburnHeartburn Relief

Tums is an antacid that is deisgned to neutralize acidity in people with heartburn and provide heartburn relief. The active ingredient in Tums is calcium carbonate and is used to treat heartburn and provide heartburn relief. Antacids like Tums work on minor heartburn by converting hydrochloric acid found in the stomach to salt, water, and carbon dioxide to relieve heartburn symptoms. Directions printed on Tums recommend to take two to four antacids to treat heartburn and sour stomach. Always read instructions on medication before taking and discuss the best medication to take with your doctor to treat your heartburn. What may help one person relieve heartburn may be useless for another.

Tums does not stop the production of hydrochloric acid in the stomach which is the cause of heartburn. Each tums has 750 mg of calcium crabonate and once all the calcium carbonate has reacted with hydrochloric acid in the stomach there will be no more therapeutic effects to treat heartburn symptoms and give heartburn relief. This is why calcium carbonate is poor at treating long lasting heartburn and GERD because there will be more acid than can be treated and heartburn symptoms will not be relieved. Because there is a maxium amount of tums antacids that can be taken in 24 hours there’s a maxium amount of stomach acid that can be neutralized by tums. If the stomach produces more acid than the calcium carbonate can neutralize the symptoms of heartburn will not be relieved. If heartburn is severe there are more effective medications that treat heartburn.

Prilosec is better for severe heartburn.

A better option to treat heartburn is Prilosec or Pepcid AC which stop the production of hydrochoric acid in the stomach. Prilosec and Pepcid AC are both safe and stop the root cause of heartburn. A review of which is more effective at treating heartburn and providing heartburn relief can be found by searching this blog. Heartburn can range from uncomfortable to painful. Medication like Prilosec can be more effective at treating heartburn than tums. Heartburn caused by foods can be treated with antacids but heartburn caused by overproduction of acid needs to be treated with stronger medication to prevent heartburn.

Doctors can prescribe stronger medication that treat heartburn than over the counter Prilosec. Another source of help in treating heartburn is the pharmacist.
